Football Beanie Pattern

I selected this post to be featured on personal blogs. Please visit the site and vote for my blog!
**UPDATE: I have answered a few questions at the bottom of this post. Will continue to answer others as time permits.**

I have been meaning to get this up for a while now. Here is my pattern for the Football beanie!

This pattern is for an Adult size! :-) But, it can be easily adapted for smaller sizes by doing less increase rounds (directions at bottom of post).

Materials:
*Brown ww yarn
*white ww yarn
*large eye needle
*I or J hook. (I have used both. I use "J" if I need it to be slightly larger.)

Directions:
1.) Start with Brown yarn and a Magic Circle. Make 10 dc into the MC. Join to the 1st dc. (10dc)
2.) ch2 (does NOT count as a stitch now & thruout), 2dc into each st around. Join. (20dc)
3.) ch2, 1dc same st, 2dc next st. *1dc nxt st, 2dc nxt st*   Rpt *to* around. Join. FO with brown.(30dc)
4.) Join white, ch2, 1dc same st & nxt st, 2dc nxt st. *1dc in each nxt 2sts, 2dc nxt st*.  Rpt *to* around. Join. FO with white. (40dc)
5.) Join brown. ch2, 1dc same st & nxt 2 sts, 2dc nxt st. *1dc each of nxt 3sts, 2dc nxt st*  Rpt *to* around. Join. (50dc)
6.) ch2, 1dc same st & nxt 3sts, 2dc nxt st. *1dc in each of nxt 4sts, 2dc nxt st* Rpt *to* around. Join. (60dc)
7.) ch2, 1dc in each st around. Join. (60dc)
8-11) ch2, 1dc in each st around. Join. FO brown at end of rnd 11.
12.) Join white, ch2 then 1dc in each st around. FO white.  Join brown.
13-17.) ch2 then dc in each st around. Join.
18.) Ch1, reverse single crochet (rsc) around. Join.  FO & weave in all ends. (60rsc)

Now, take the white and large eye needle and make a vertical line between the two white stripes on the hat. Then, make about 6 evenly spaced horizontal lines across the vertical line you just made. FO and weave in end.
(((I know that may not be very clear, but if you look at the picture, it is fairly simple to figure out.)))

I have tried to figure out different directions for different sizes. Hope these make sense. You just basically do less rounds to get smaller sizes and place your white stripes evenly at the top and bottom.

For newborn: Using H hook, work thru Round 4, then work even. Place the white stripes at rnds 3 & 10. Stop at row 11, then work a rnd of rsc for rnd 12.
For 6+months: Using H hook, work thru round 5, then work even. Place white stripes at rnds 3 and 11. Stop at row 12, then work a rnd of rsc for rnd 13.
For toddler-child: Use I hook and work as for 6+mos size, adding 2 extra rnds (15rnds total). Place white stripes at rnds 3 and 13.
You can make any of these longer by adding more rnds and moving the bottom white stripe down.

I have had a few question asked and hope I can answer them all.
1. What does "work even" mean?
Essentially, it means that once you are finished with the increase rounds, you will work one stitch into each stitch around (from previous round) for the remaining rounds.
Meaning, if your previous round has 60 stitches, then the next round would have 60 as well...Hope that makes sense...sometimes I have a hard time explaining things.

2. What is "Magic Circle"?
Here are YouTube videos explaining "Magic Circle". Hope this helps!

I also love to use the info Teresa provides on her site:

She even has a section for newbies and provides videos for many of the techniques.

I will try to find more detailed info on the techniques and get back to you, if that's ok.
